Looking back on the past 17 years is nbearable, and Hong Kong’s future is drenched in new worries

The scorching heat of summer and the threat of rainstorm did not deter Hong Kong people from taking to the streets on the 17th anniversary of the city’s return to China. The 510,000 citizens that joined the demonstration broke the record of 500,000 made in 2003, demonstrating Hong Kong people’s discontent and their determination for change.

With a multitude of loose ends to tie up, Hong Kong’s deep-rooted contradictions are deteriorating. The chaotic governance is of course one of the reasons leading to the outpour of grievances. The heating up of disputes over political reform is in fact the main agitator of commotion in the community. For this, both the Hong Kong government and the central authorities are responsible.

The central authorities and the Hong Kong government can neither tell friends from foes nor distinguish right from wrong. Repelling worthy people and attracting malevolent ones, antagonizing friends and appeasing enemies, they only find themselves end up utterly isolated with the oppositionists expanding. As the row over political reform intensifies, the Occupy Central movement is doomed to take place, with a greater chaos in its wake.

Although the situation looks grim, some people are still willing to speak out. It took Hong Kong over 150 years to develop from a small fishing village to an international metropolis that received worldwide attention. However, merely 17 years after the handover, Hong Kong is unfortunately reduced from an economic city to a political city, and Hong Kong people are turned from “economic animals” to “political animals”.

The promise of “no change for 50 years” has only gone through one-third of its term, Hong Kong has already changed beyond recognition. “One country, two systems” has gone out of tune; “Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong” has spoiled and turned rancid. Trapped in a cul-de-sac, the city is lost as to what course to follow.
