The sea of troubles with blind admiration of foreign experts

It is a straw in the wind. It may be the constant hiccups of the MTR, or it may be the endless dramas at the ICAC. But it is just the tip of an iceberg of chaos after the handover, and an epitome of the present government’s soulless regime. The Chinese tend to revere everything foreign and pander to overseas power. The Hong Kong government does so particularly, since it believes all foreign experts are better, but the result is often the opposite. The incumbent CEO of MTR, the American Jay Walder, has laid off over 1,000 employees during his first two years in office. The staggering increase in MTR fares also occasioned considerable complaints from labour unions and the public.

Examples abound of such foreign experts usurping top posts in Hong Kong. Graham Sheffield, a Briton, was hired as the CEO of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) with a handsome pay. His successor, Michael Lynch, is also a foreigner. However, up to now, the WKCD still remains a castle in the air. Nicholas Sallnow-Smith, the Chairman of The Link, is also British. Under his reign, The Link has become an unscrupulous landlord that forces small tenants out of its shopping malls. The new vice-chancellor of the century-old Hong Kong University (HKU), Peter Mathieson, is again British. Criticizing him as “not up to par”, the faculty and students even say his appointment is an insult to HKU, Hong Kong and the whole of China. Moreover, when the “Occupy Central” movement is on the verge of breaking out, the oldest and most famous university in Hong Kong is now in the hands of a Briton. It is indeed worrying as to what will happen.

In name, Hong Kong has been returned to China for 17 years. In reality, other than the flag having been changed and the Governor having been replaced by Chief Executive, foreign mandarins are still aloof, traitors and flunkeys of foreign masters are still stirring up troubles. No wonder some people would describe Hong Kong as “haunted by ghosts”. The Central officials keep on reiterating that Hong Kong must be ruled by people that love the country and the city. Unfortunately, the fact is just contrary: the Central authorities idolize foreign things, while Hong Kong and Macau are “haunted by ghosts”. If only the sovereignty is returned, but not the right to rule, how can the two cities not be in disorder?
