Residents of a former colony now attack people from their motherland

A few days ago, radical groups opposing the influx of Mainland visitors into Hong Kong staged a so-called “anti-locust movement” in Tsim Sha Tsui. Their vulgar behaviour and coarse language were so unacceptable that they raised many eyebrows. Senior Hong Kong government officials condemned the act as having seriously damaged the image of Hong Kong, undermined the city’s economic interests and precipitated conflicts between the two places. State media on the Mainland also strongly criticized the rally by publishing commentaries for two consecutive days.

What you would not wish for yourself, do not impose on others. If Hong Kong people dislike the uncivilized behaviours of some Mainland visitors, how can they themselves be regarded as civilized if they hurl foul language at visitors and humiliate them with obscene gestures? Is it not “near-fascism” for the demonstrators to call the Mainland tourists “Chinamen”, a derogatory term Japanese invaders lobbed at the Chinese?

Some people talk about democracy and freedom all the time, but their behaviours utterly run counter to democracy and freedom. Anti-China mass media which want to mess up Hong Kong have long been spreading discriminatory words against Mainlanders and new arrivals form the Mainland. Certain academics advocate “localism”, while a number of politicians call for the imposition of “land arrival tax”. No matter how they package it, they cannot hide their real purpose of targeting specific social groups, driving a wedge between Hong Kongers and Mainlanders and pursuing “Hong Kong independence”.

However, times have changed. If some people think they can achieve their political goals by such radical means, they are too stupid and naive. Waving the colonial Hong Kong flags, the protesters’ humiliation of Mainland visitors is equivalent to challenging the bottom line of “one country two systems”. They are doomed to take the backlash. At the end, both sides would suffer, and Hong Kong would get the worst of it.
